Attraction back on track in dale

Following over 14 months of closure the Wensleydale Railway is back on track and operating between Bedale, Leeming Bar and Scruton stations where visitors can step back in time and enjoy a living museum experience.

For the first time since the 1950s there will be a regular train service to Scruton.

While there, passengers can meet the Station Master and his wife, tour the multi award-winning station building, including the piggery and Tram Shed workshop in the back garden.

“You can also spend some time visiting the ‘Thankful Village’ of Scruton itself which is a delight, enjoy a wine or two in The Coore Arms or perhaps take one of our suggested walks through farmland and on peaceful roads,” said a spokesman.

“And you can then travel to Leeming Bar where the ongoing work to the station house can be seen before a full re-opening within the next couple of months.

“Thanks to a grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund the station house has undergone a complete restoration and focus in now on decorating and furnishing the station house to how it would have looked in the 1920’s.

“Volunteers in period dress will be on hand to speak with visitors about the project.”

The spokesman added: “Following 14 months of closure we were very much looking forward to welcoming visitors back to the railway with this brand new experience and to be running regular service trains to Scruton for the first time since the 1950’s.

“The past year has given us time to look at where we have been and where we would like to go and we have some really exciting plans for the future.”
