The cathedral was transformed into a film set to depict Westminster Abbey and Hall for the show - which stars former Doctor Who favourite Jenna Coleman - set to air later this year.

The south nave and north quire aisles were used for the scenes, and the Dean of Ripon, the Very Rev John Dobson, was delighted to welcome the film crew.

He said: “Ripon Cathedral has been transported back in time by about 160 years and moved south by 230 miles!

“We are thoroughly enjoying hosting the filming of Victoria, serving as Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. People are welcome to come and see where it has all been happening.”

Verger and Communications Officer Joseph Priestley said: “Quite a few Ripon residents came in to sit and watch it all unfold. All of our services ran as normal and we were still open to visitors. This was a great element to add to their experience.

“I was talking to one of the writers and they were really impressed with the cathedral and all of its history.”

The filming location unit spent three days in Ripon - one day to get in and dress the set, one day for the filming, and a final day to return everything back to normal.

The special scenes filmed at Ripon Cathedral will be aired in autumn.

A Victoria exhibition opens today at Harewood House, which has also been used for filming.
