The departure of one of the district’s most highly regarded young musical directors was announced this week, news which will be felt by many musicians locally.
Edmund Aldhouse, musical director of chamber choir Vocalis, is busy rehearsing John Rutter’s Birthday Madrigals and Edward Elgar’s From the Bavarian Highlands with choir members for their next concert – A Madrigal Mystery Tour on Saturday, June 29.
The sad news is that this will be Edmund’s final concert with Vocalis. He is leaving his post as assistant musical director at Ripon Cathedral and will move to Ely Cathedral to become assistant organist from September.
Edmund said: “It is with immense sadness that I must relinquish my post as Vocalis Musical Director.
“Working with Vocalis has been one of the most enjoyable and proudest experiences of my career and the achievements of the last four concerts have established this chamber choir as a force to be reckoned with in Yorkshire’s choral scene.
“I am delighted with the progress Vocalis has made since early last year and wish the group the very best for the future. I could not have wished for a more welcoming and enthusiastic group of singers and will miss everyone greatly.”
Jenny Macdonald-Smith, chairman of Vocalis, said: “We are all delighted for Edmund but are very sad to be losing such a talented young musical director after a relatively short time.
“Edmund is a gifted organist and musician and we know that he has a brilliant career ahead.
“With Edmund’s support, we are now looking to recruit, and plan to have a new musical director in place by September .”
