Movie-maker Ben’s premiere for comedy

A YOUNG filmmaker from Harrogate is premiering his latest movie at the Royal Hall next month.

Ben Derrick, 20, will screen his new film Trendi at the historic venue on December 9.

The movie has been shot at locations around Harrogate and Pateley Bridge, including Bettys’ Imperial Room.

Ben said: “It’s a comedy parody based around two Yorkshiremen. It’s set locally and filmed around here, so it has a down-to-earth feel.

“We’re hoping to make a lot of people laugh.”

It is Ben’s second feature, following Fashion Police, which was screened at the Harrogate Odeon in 2008 before an invited audience that included legendary director Ken Russell.

He told the Advertiser it was a real honour to premiere his new work at the Royal Hall.

“We are really lucky,” he said.

“The idea came about earlier in the year and I talked to Coun Bill Hoult, who was then the mayor, and he got them to waive the hire fee for me, so we will just pay staff costs.”

There will be 300 invited guests, along with 100 seats for members of the public, who are just asked to make a donation.

The story concerns Trevor Chanel (played by Jerry Harvey) and Robert Armani (Peter Buller), two microwave salesmen from Yorkshire who plan fashion trends.

The next season’s major fad? Concrete clothes.

Nevin Ward, a veteran of the Pateley Bridge Dramatic Society, also stars as a flamboyant fashion designer, while the music was written by American composer Ryan Paul.

Trendi, which runs 45 minutes, took six months to shoot and five months to edit.

The premiere will feature a performance from young, local band Purple Mafia, for whom Ben recently shot a music video.

Ben, who works at Hornbeam Park Developments, said he was keen to enter Trendi into independent film festivals, including the Los Angeles branch of the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival, which he has attended before.

To book tickets for the premiere at the Royal Hall, which will take place from 7-9pm, email or call 07528 441776 and leave a message.
