Harrogate Dramatic Society is set to start its new season with a real comic bang.

The opening show of its 2013-14 season is to be one of playwright Alan Ayckbourn’s greatest comedies - Season’s Greetings.

It should help cement a reputation boosted earlier in the year when the HDS triumphed at the Niddersale Drama Festival and then reached the national final of the All England Drama Festival for the first time.

Stuart Kellett, director and also newly-elected chairman of Harrogate Dramatic Society, said he was really looking forward to the new production.

“ I have always liked Season’s Greetings having seen it for the first when HDS did it at Harrogate Theatre in 1997 at which time it was a great success. The worst nightmares of everybody’s Christmas come together in the play and, although it is very funny in parts, there are also moments of extreme sadness. “

Running from October 2-5, this Ayckbourn favourite offers a a Christmas with a difference.

Written in 1980, it’s a darkly farcical comedy about a dysfunctional family in a typical English suburban house and how their various shenanigans develop over one Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day period.

The play was turned into a BBC TV drama in 1986 and has reappeared in successful tours or in London at regular intervals since then.

Kellett is confident it will be a hit with Harrogate audiences once again.

He said: “Ayckbourn is always popular with Harrogate audiences and I am sure this play will not disappoint those who come along to see it.”
