Will Tubular Bells event hit £10,000 Harrogate Hospital charity target?

Businessman and vintage hi-fi aficiando Colin Paine, who launched the first Vinyl Sessions 18 months ago, said: “The idea was hatched two years ago and we have put a lot of smiles on a lot of peoples face plus raised almost £9,000 in the process so far for Friends of Harrogate Hospital Community Charity.”

The approach each time of Vinyl Sessions is to play a classic rock or pop album on vinyl on restored age-related, high-end equipment from a large privately owned collection, to give the listening experience exactly how the artist intended.

Happening monthly at Starling Bar Café Kitchen in Harrogate, the latest event devoted to Mike Oldfield’s classic 1973 album Tubular Bells will take place as a one-off in the magnificent surroundings of All Saints Church in Kirkby Overblow.

As always, the event will be run by six volunteer team members with contributions from regular “Professor of Pop” Graham Chalmers of the Harrogate Advertiser and visual slide shows created by Jim Dobbs.

But the Tubular Bells event has presented a new challenge for the resilient Colin Paine.

He said: “This lovely church is quite a challenge in terms of acoustics and Tubular Bells does has some very low frequency content that many will not have noticed before.

“The system for the playback is all magnificent 1970s high end – Sony ES amplification and 6x KEF Reference speakers, with over 400 watts of audio.

“I must give credit to my wife Jill who used to ask what I planned to do with all this equipment!”

Places are free to reserve but a donation on admission is suggested £5 at the event, which starts at 8pm.

There will be a raffle and The Shoulder of Mutton is nearby and handy for refreshments.
