Harrogate's most adventurous prize exhibition set to open

If the first-ever Platform Open Annual Art Exhibition in Harrogate proved popular, this year's event should be an even bigger hit.

To be held at Morphets auctioneers of Harrogate in less than a fortnight’s time, organisers of this showcase of 62 emerging and established contemporary artists from across the UK are shaking up the traditional exhibition format in a creative way.

One particular coup for Platform Open is the participation of British artist and filmmaker Everton Wright who will be screening: Walking Drawings Across the Estuaries, a unique and evocative art installation which makes a striking use of Cumbrian heavy horses and the landscape.

When taken together with a schools day for youngsters, with a performance by Kier Hall and His Jazz Band and musical buskers, this three-day festival running from Friday, July 15 to Sunday, July 17 is aiming to be genuinely a cut above.

Platform Open Arts Founder and curator, Heidi Donohoe, said: “My aim from the outset has been to focus on engaging art, people and places by offering a non-conventional approach to how we value, view and participate with art.

“This years exhibition promises to do just that within the space of No 6, the quirky victorian space of Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers, Morphets Of Harrogate.”

As well as providing a springboard for artists, Platform Open also offers the public the opportunity to experience, engage and obtain unique pieces at affordable prices whilst raising money for the children’s charity NSPCC.
