HARROGATE’s Kao Loi Gym is toasting more success, after Thai boxer Duncan Scott beat Luke Kennedy from Tobins Gym in Leeds to lift the EMF Pro-Am English title.

Scott, right, who trains at the Hornbeam centre and already holds a British Amateur title, won the fight on points.

The fighters records prior to the fight suggested a closely contested bout, with Scott having only two losses after nine fights, and Kennedy not losing after seven. Many of the pundits could not pick a winner.

“We were very confident going into the fight and our training camp could not have gone better” said Scott. “We had a game plan and it was just a matter of sticking to it.”

The fight, matched at 57kg over five rounds, began at a furious pace with Kennedy trying to hurt Scott with heavy punches and low kicks, but Scott quickly moved past these weapons into the clinch.

Scott began to dominate by using his knee strikes, although Kennedy turned him well on occasion and countered with his own knees.

However towards the end of the round Scott landed a hurtful knee to Kennedy’s left rib and he tried to protect it, but Scott piled on the pressure attacking the injury again and again winning the round convincingly.

Going into the second Kennedy rallied and started strongly with punches and low kicks, hoping to discourage Scott from his incessant pressure. It wasn’t long before he found himself in the clinch again and on the receiving end of knee after knee.

The strategy was working well and it proved to be the story throughout the fight. Only in the last round did Kennedy manage to land a telling punch but it was answered with a heavy body kick, and Scott took the title belt by unanimous decision.

Pierre Mahon, head coach at Kao Loi said: “Duncan is going from strength to strength and he will be soon ready to challenge the best in the country at 57kg.

“We are planning to work on a few things, and then we will be trying to move up the British Professional rankings.”
