Harrogate Veterans kicked-off their Seniors World Cup campaign with a 7-1 friendly win over a Bangkok Veterans League X1.

A brace from Godwin Douglas, Lee Henry and Simon Deakin, plus one from Andy Toman ensured a comfortable victory for the Vets.

The game was used to find the right balance between the three age groups in the squad.

Having completed three days of acclimatisation training, the English squad have now moved into the tournament hotel in the centre of Bangkok.

Today they face hosts Thailand in the magnificent Rajamangala Stadium for the opening group game at a testing kick-off time of 5pm when the sun will still be bearing down.

However, with Andy Barkway and Charlie Brown now declared fit after sitting out the friendly game, manager Paul Bell has a full squad of 25 to select from.

“The lads have worked extremely hard over the past three days are now raring to go,” said Bell.

“We have a big squad but in this heat we are going to need all of them with up to 17/18 likely to be involved in each game.”
