Harrogate League: Hampsthwaite United edge 11-goal cup thriller over Wetherby Athletic

Andy Hullah scored twice as Hampsthwaite United edged past Wetherby Athletic in the Harrogate and District Challenge Cup in on Saturday.

Wetherby played almost the entirity of the tie with ten men, and went out in dramaticfashion 6-5 after extra time

Athletic had taken a lead through Chris Travena’s penalty before Joe Baker saw red, which also led to Hampsthwaite equalising with captain Andy Spencer’s penalty.

The penalty was quickly followed by two more goals for Hampsthwaite but another Travena penalty reduced the deficit before half-time.

The pendulum swung in Wetherby’s favour in the second half as goals from Tom Robin and Brian Blewitt put them ahead.But tired legs played its part for the ten men, however, and United drew level with three minutes remaining, taking the game into extra time.

The first 15 minutes saw no goals but with five minutes left to play, the home side regained the advantage. But Wetherby rallied again through Josh Baggott only to concede in the final minute when Nathan Garnham scored from a corner.

Wetherby manager David Cope said: “As a manager you ask your team to give you commitment - be responsible - have the right attitude and wear the shirt with pride, I got all four and more. ”

Elsewhere in the League Challenge Cup, Kirk Deighton Rangers proved too much for Division One Hampsthwaite FC as they humbled them 9-0, Jonathan Gobbi scoring a hat-trick for Rangers.

Ripon Red Arrows took Beckwithshaw Saints to extra time after a 4-4 draw but ended up losing 7-4 as Saints scored three goals in the last 30 minutes.

Goals from Toby Hardaker, Alex Coombes and Liam Bannard handed Boroughbridge A success at Bramham, winning 3-1, while Gerard McCargo’s brace helped Clifford to a 7-2 win at Bardsey Reserves.

Lee Tattersall’s goal was not enough for the away side as Thirsk Falcons Reserves came unstuck at home to Dalton Athletic losing 3-1, while Pannal Sports beat Pateley Bridge 3-1 in an all Division One tie.

The all Division Two clash between FC Harrogate and Addingham saw Harrogate come out on top with goals from Jonny Hewison and Leon Rodman handing the home team progression to the next round.

The gulf in class between FC United Knaresborough and Helperby United was evident and Helperby ran out 12-0 winners in the all Division Two game, Chris Simpson bagging six goals to add to the rout.
