Water shortage forces Great Yorkshire Show organisers to close toilets

Show organisers were forced to close toilets on the site

Unexpectedly high demand this afternoon for water that is brought up from boreholes which serve two-thirds of the site led to the shortages.

Organisers stressed that livestock had not been left without access to water yesterday, but public toilets had to be closed.

Visitors have been assured that water supplies will be restored for the third and final day of this year’s Great Yorkshire Show tomorrow.

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s chief executive, Nigel Pulling, said that an investigation is underway to establish why demand for water from the boreholes outstripped the supply.

He added that water was available from other parts of the site which are served by the main supply from Yorkshire Water, including Fodder and the Harrogate Caravan Park.

Tankers are being brought on to the site during tonight to ensure that three tanks which contain a total of 150,000 gallons of water are full for when visitors start to arrive for the final day of this year’s show in the morning.
