TV stars' touch of glitter at Harrogate blind artist's exhibition

Stars of TV soap opera Emmerdale were among the guests at the launch of blind Harrogate artist Holly Holder's debut exhibition.

Kelvin Fletcher, who plays Andy Sugden, and John Middleton, who plays Ashley Thomas, enjoyed the selection of paintings and prints by the artist at Art in the Mill gallery in Knaresborough.Showing influences of Japanese art, many of the dozens of nature-themed paintings in Out of the Dark showed an impressively delicate touch and a natural grasp of the emotional atmosphere created by colour washes delivered with impressionistic subtlety.First diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) in 2000, the former make-up artist in TV and film uses her new-found artistic talents as a way of escaping her condition.The talented mum-of-two works at her studio at Conyngham Hall in Knaresborough, producing lonely pictures of poppies and flowers, The Stray in Harrogate and people-less landscapes in Yorkshire and the Highlands

With her paintings already picking up sales from the exhibiton, Holly is to donate 10 per cent of all sales to RP Fighting Blindness, which supports medical research into Retinitis Pigmentosa to help find treatments or cures for the condition and provide information and support for people affected.Holly Holder - Out of the Dark runs at Blue Skies gallery in Art in the Mill, Knaresborough until November 25.
