Not surprisingly, there is great debate on the subject as planners and highways officials attempt to come up with a set of plans which will not only reduce traffic and cut emmisions, but will also help to attract people back to a town centre which was already struggling for trade even before the troubles caused by Covid resulted in costly lockdowns for retail and hospitality.

Are cycle lanes the answer? Will paving over town centre roads attract more people to the area? Would people really give up their cars if the infrastructure and public transport were vastly improved? Would the closure of roads really affect business?
There are so many questions that the Harrogate Advertiser has this week decided to launch its own ‘Sustainable Transport Survey’ so that we can gauge the opinion of our readers and report back for all of you, and all of the authorities concerned, to see.

A split opinion is expected, but just how split remains to be seen.
