A spokesman for Leeds City Council said: “We have been made aware of a small void that has opened up in one of the bays at the St James Street car park in Wetherby.

“We have a team on site who are filling in the void with concrete today before resurfacing work is carried out tomorrow.

“The void, which is above an old cellar head and measures about a metre-and-a-half wide and deep, has been cordoned off while the repairs take place.

“To ensure the safety of the general public as well as that of the team on site, the car park has been closed while the initial work is carried out but the expectation is that it should reopen later today (Wednesday), except for the affected bay and one neighbouring space.

“There is no sign of wider problems on the site.”
