Sports facilities get thumbs-up after revamp
Masham's newly-revamped sports facilities were officially opened recently.
The Recreation Ground has undergone extensive work to turn it into a thriving sporting hub for the local community.
The ribbon to the new Multi-user Games Area (MUGA) was cut by the Mayor of Harrogate Borough, Councillor Nigel Simms and his wife the Mayoress Lynn Simms.
The parish council’s vision for a MUGA was made possible because of a Landfill Communities Fund Grant from Tarmac UK Ltd and a Play Area Grant from Harrogate Borough Council.
A parish council spokesperson said: “The parish council and the community of Masham would like to offer their sincere thanks.
“Nick Reed is also deserving of our thanks as he wrote the successful grant application submission and project managed the installation.
“The MUGA is a wonderful addition to the already fantastic range of sporting and leisure facilities on offer in the town. We look forward to its use by residents and visitors for many years to come.”
On the opening day a five-a-side football tournament was organised by councillor Colin Barke.
The game involved seven teams and comprised of people from local businesses and clubs, with the Masham Sports Association coming out on top as they sealed victory with the very last penalty kick.
Andy Coe, unit manager at Tarmac, said: “I was delighted to be invited to the formal opening and spend the day at such a fantastic event.
“It was great to see first hand how the money is being used to create an amazing facility that benefits the whole local community.”
A raffle was also held on the day, with £380 being raised in support of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
