So, you’ve achieved the three-bed semi dream – now what?
It’s pretty simple, really – you can either stay where you are, or move onwards and upwards. Which may mean that your next property has an extra bedroom, or is detached – or both.
Four bedrooms could mean one for the mortgage-payer(s) and one each for three children, or one for the parents, one apiece for two children and a guest room.
(Or, in fantasy-land, one for the parents and the others for various young adult children who contribute handsomely to the mortgage.)
However you use them, four bedrooms are undeniably better than three. And having a detached property means that whoever lives in those rooms can make almost as much noise as they like.
The following four properties are all detached with at least four bedrooms and are all currently for sale in our area for £500K or less.
Oakland House is a detached, stone-built property at the head of a quiet cul-de-sac close to the centre of Pateley Bridge.
It has been extended and so is very spacious and in excellent condition.
With two separate staircases and the option to convert the utility room into a further kitchen, the property could potentially be split into dual living accommodation.
In addition to its four bedrooms, it has a detached double garage and off-street parking, as well as gardens to three sides and fantastic views across Nidderdale.
Old Starr Cottage is a beautiful grade II-listed Georgian property in Helperby.
It has been comprehensively restored by the current vendors and combines a wealth of period features, such as beams, sash windows and stone-flag floors, with a contemporary feel.
But the work need not have finished yet – planning permission has been approved to extend the living accommodation to include an open-plan family room with living kitchen, utility/bootroom, cloakroom and master bedroom suite.
The terrace and large garden enjoy uninterrupted views over paddock land and the countryside beyond.
Fairfield is a spacious, detached house in the heart of Kirkby Malzeard.
It too has been extended but care has been taken to retain a number of period features. In addition to its four bedrooms, one of which has an en suite shower room, there is a utility room, snug and upstairs study.
There are also large walled gardens to the rear, complete with well looked-after raised vegetable beds, together with a detached double garage.
Finally, 9 Milbeck Green is a family home on an enviable corner plot within walking distance of Lady Hastings Primary School in Collingham near Wetherby.
It has a utility room, study and spacious conservatory, as well as a fifth bedroom on the upper floor.
It also has gardens on three sides, a storage outbuilding, and an integral garage with power, light and inspection pit.
