Following a sell-out 2013 programme, the first in Harrogate International Festival’s popular Salon North events of 2014 is back – teaching Harrogate how to be cool.

Hosted in Harrogate’s Masonic Hall on April 24, Salon is dubbed a revolutionary movement for the heart and mind.

The event, which consists of a night of stimulating ideas in art, science and psychology designed to change your life for the better, has proven a sell-out smash-hit each time.

The infotainment format consists of three speakers, given 30 minutes to engage the audience with their subject - plus intervals allowing time for a well-crafted gin and tonic.

Helen Bagnall, co-founder of Salon, said: “It’s basically massive ideas in intimate spaces. We created it because it was the kind of night we wanted to go to.

“We had done over 50 Salons in London and it was a huge success so we were looking for the right partner to take it out of London. We were delighted when Harrogate International Festivals decided to work with us back in 2012.”

The first Salon of 2014 revolves around the theme Cool Hunters with three speakers.

Zoe Cormier, the author and creator of performance group Guerilla Science, will explores how science has moved from geek to chic.

Trevor Cox, Professor of Acoustic Engineering, will show audiences how to listen deeper to the world’s music from singing sand-dunes to the sound of our planet six miles from the surface in his sonic odyssey.

Finally, behavioural economist Nick Southgate will answers the difficult question ‘what is cool?’ He will help the Salon crowd pinpoint the coolest moments in their own and the world’s history, and show you how to be hip.

Helen said: “The Salon is a way of engaging with new subjects in a fun way. You can come and have a glass of wine, relax and enjoy it, but you’ll go away having learnt something new.”
