Prawns make everything better.
Perhaps it’s due to growing up on the Scottish seaside, but I’ve always thought the prawn - be it an Australian king or a supermarket tiddler - has the power to cheer folk up.
Good thing, then, that following a long week, Ian at Burgers and More in Harrogate was able to talk me through the new establishment’s Surf ‘n’ Turf burger - complete with two shell-on king prawns (£15.45).
Pictured above, it’s an aesthetically pleasing tower of beef and fish - with whitebait and battered squid rings soaring above the beef burger.
After figuring out how to eat it - a fishing rod would have been more appropriate than a fork - one bite and I was, er, hooked. Delicious, and different.
My dining companion opted for the Taj Mahal burger, which comprised a chicken fillet with an onion bhaji covered in curry sauce with mango chutney (£13.45).
I had a bit of it - I was invited to - and, once again, the unusual nature of the burger added to its appeal. This is high quality food.
Other options include the USA, which comprises a burger topped with redcurant jam between two pancakes.
The burger is covered in maple syrup and served with a side of ice cream!
Options abound, in fact. How about a Matador, an Oink Oink, or for the brave, a chilli-fuelled Bucking Bronco?
The menu was described to us by the friendly Ian, who is helping to make the newly opened Burgers and More - situated beneath the Kimberley Hotel on King’s Road - the burger joint of choice for Harrogate.
Each of the burgers is handmade using local meat.
Some of the burgers are infused with ingredients (for example, the Red White & Blue contains a blue stilton burger), and all are made using traditional methods.
If you fancy trying a few of the burgers, you can create a ‘tower’ or even try three mini versions off the main menu.
So the burgers are different. And they’re good - well worth a try. But what’s the ‘more’ about?
Well, the owners want to make visitors feel welcome, and, although burgers are fashionable at the moment, they aren’t to everyone’s taste. So you can choose from a list of pizza options, and there is also an extensive list of starter, main and dessert options.
With televisions showing live sport and a bar should you fancy popping in for the match, Burgers and More provides an interesting alternative on King’s Road.
