Remembrance for war heroes

A COMMEMORATIVE service will be held at Stonefall cemetary on Sunday, September 11 to remember the young airmen who gave their lives during the Second World War.

Air cadets from Harrogate, Knareborough, Wetherby and Ripon will support the service and subject to conditions, the Yorkshire University Squadron from Church Fenton will perform a fly past at 3.15pm, prior to the laying of 15 wreaths.

Of the 1017 graves at the cemetery 666 of those buried are Canadians, 224 are from the UK with the rest made up of Australians, New Zealanders, Russians and Germans.

The majority of those buried there were based at airfields within Yorkshire and many would have died at Harrogate District Hospital.
