Revealed: Major summer events planned for Stray in Harrogate

The potential return of live events on the Stray this summer has not only been welcomed by local authorities but also the voluntary group which acts as guardians of Harrogate’s lovely 200 acres of parkland.

Stray Defence Association chair Judy d’Arcy Thompson said: “Our wonderful Stray has been a fantastic asset for everyone during the difficult times of the past year, giving everyone somewhere to enjoy fresh air to exercise or relax and social distance at the same time.

“It will be great to see some events back on the Stray with the Food & Drink Festival and many will also be pleased to see the Fake Festival back as it is always a popular and fun occasion.

“Life is slowly getting back to normal and people will be delighted to enjoy these events again. Let’s hope that the weather is kind.”

Harrogate Borough Council’s leader, Coun Richard Cooper has been keen to utilise the Stray when possible within the rules monitored for its protection by owners the Duchy of Lancaster as part of the town’s economic recovery from Covid.

Coun Cooper said: “It will be great to see events being held on the Stray again.

“We are fortunate to have this expanse of grassland to use freely for our recreation and to host a limited number of small events in line with the Stray Act.

“I know that for many it has been a haven for exercise and outdoor conversation during lockdown.

“It is good that it can now once again begin to be enjoyed as a place for occasional entertainment, too.”

Another public event set to take place on the Stray in 2021 is the Harrogate Christmas Market. Cancelled because of Covid last year, it brings an estimated £2.7million to Harrogate’s economy.

There are also hopes the Harrogate Lions’ charity bonfire will return to the Stray in November.
