A Barnardo’s ‘Extra Care Community’ will be developed in Ripon after the application was granted planning permission by Harrogate Borough Council (HBC).
At a planning meeting on Tuesday, March 31, councillors approved the conversion and extension of the Red House on Palace Road to form the extra close care housing community.
The development, a former children’s home with local authority care facilities, will include an administration centre, communal facilities and 55 residential units.
Concerns had been raised by Ripon City Council that the development would exclude a number of people as it is a commercial venture but Barnardo’s stressed any profit would be “ploughed back into the charity”.
A spokesman for Barnardo’s said: “We are very pleased that the planning application has been approved. It will allow us to build a development that respects the existing building and also enhances the conservation area.
“We believe, when built, the development will be an asset to the community.”
The development will be built on the same street as Barnardo’s Spring Hill School, where a consultation looking into the school’s future has begun.
