The store has extended its opening times and is operating from Tuesday to Saturday between 9am and 4pm.

The shop occupies the former premises of BEK’S Electrical and was the first to be opened by the charity in more than 30 years.

It sells ladies’, men’s and children’s clothing, books, toys, ornaments, kitchenware, DVDs, music, computer games, furnishings and bric-a-brac.

Money raised will help the charity take action to prevent cancer and improve the likelihood of survival across Yorkshire.

Rebecca Clark, interim shop manager, said: “I’m looking forward to working with both the local community and volunteers whilst managing the shop. Yorkshire Cancer Research does some great work for the people of Yorkshire and it’s a great honour to help them raise money to help even more people, especially those in the local area.”

Volunteer Anne Hudson, 69, from Knaresborough, began volunteering at the shop recently.

She said: “I retired at 62 as I wanted to spend more time indulging in my hobbies and volunteering.

“Now, as I near my 70th birthday I can’t think of a better time to start volunteering.

“There are many great charity shops in Knaresborough, but I wanted to work for a charity that helps our local community, which is exactly what Yorkshire Cancer Research does.”

Former practice manager Susan Massey decided to volunteer after seeing adverts seeking new volunteers for the shop. The 73-year-old said: “My partner has had a lot of treatment in Leeds which is why I decided to volunteer. I’ve been here a few weeks and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time.

“Everyone is very friendly, from the other volunteers to the management, and it’s also a very rewarding to help raise money for such a great cause.”
