Royal surprise for schoolgirls lands on mat

Sisters Jessica, 8, and Beth Bednall, 6, sent handmade condolence cards to HM the Queen to express their sympathy on the death of Prince Philip.

Mum Rebecca Bednall said: “When Phillip died they felt sorry for the Queen as she had been married for so long and wondered how she would cope. But as Jessica said she has lots of people to look after her now.

“They both watched the gun salutes and the funeral and were fascinated by what was going on. They both took a real keen interest.

“They wanted to write a card and asked if I could find out how to do it.”

So, with help from Google, Mum found out where to send the card and the Aspin Park Academy pupils set to work with card and colouring pens.

“They both wrote that they were sorry to hear that Prince Phillip had died and they hoped that the Queen was okay and sent her lots of love,” added Rebecca.

But a surprise was in store for the sympathetic youngsters last week who were left ‘over the moon’ with joy.

Rebecca explained: “Two envelopes from Windsor Castle landed on the door mat.

“They couldn’t believe that they had actually got a response from the Queen.

“They were so excited and over the moon and couldn’t wait to tell their friends.”

The message on the cards sent from Windsor Castle, which were signed Elizabeth R, read: “I would like to express thanks for your message of sympathy on the death of my husband.”
