A play on words is often a fun thing and it’s something that keeps us entertained at Welcome to Yorkshire.

As the Tour de Yorkshire international cycling race was postponed until 2022 because of the pandemic, we introduced the Tour de Walkshire (see what we did there?)... another way to showcase the county, whilst encouraging people to get involved walking, running, cycling or pushing in a wheelchair, and raising money for Yorkshire Cancer Research throughout May, raising thousands of pounds for essential, lifesaving cancer research.

The Tour de Walkshire has been part of Welcome to Yorkshire’s year-long Walkshire campaign, launched on New Year’s Day, a walk for every day of the year and a great way to enjoy the great Yorkshire outdoors, plus beneficial to health and well-being.

Another play on words and also something to ‘make you feel good’, as well as entertain and inform, is Welcome to Yorkshire’s brand new ‘Talkshire’ podcast (again, see what we did there?).

Podcasts have become increasingly popular over recent times and what better way to celebrate the county than to invite celebrated celebrities and fantastic folk to talk about Yorkshire? Growing up in the region, filming here, touring with top shows, places to visit, living the Yorkshire life and so much more.

Welcome to Yorkshire’s Head of Communications and editor of This Is Y, Carolyn Nicoll, has been catching up with a stellar cast of great guests for Talkshire.

First up was award-winning writer and director Kay Mellor talking about growing up in Leeds, showing off Yorkshire through her internationally-screened productions and why she’d never leave.

Actress Julie Hesmondhalgh chats about playing the iconic Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street and bringing her new one-woman play ‘The Greatest Play in the History of the World’ to theatres across the county, plus international explorer and TV presenter Ben Fogle explained how his travels in Yorkshire (he’s a big fan) compare to climbing Mount Everest or rowing the Atlantic Ocean, as he looks forward to being a big part of ‘5 On The Farm’ in the county during the August Bank Holiday, alongside many famous faces, including the county’s very own Yorkshire shepherdess Amanda Owen.

Still to come, Alfie Boe talks about performing in the West End, on stage on Broadway and at Harewood House in September, multi-award-winning Paralympian Hannah Cockroft travels the world competing in far-flung places but her heart is in her home county.

There’s also Talkshire chat coming up from TV’s Dr Amir Khan and sports broadcaster Ian Dennis, All about Yorkshire, plus a revealing interview from a member of one of the world’s biggest bands and he confesses that his absolute dream would be to live in... Harrogate! Watch this space!

Perhaps he’s experienced Bettys Café Tea Rooms, as was one of the top loves of England football manager Gareth Southgate and also brilliant baker Kim-Joy from The Great British Bake Off, when asked what they loved about Yorkshire.

So if you’re taking part in Walkshire, on a ramble on a route around the picturesque paths of Harrogate, then listen to a Talkshire podcast and be inspired about all things Yorkshire.

Another wonderful way to promote the county and all it has to offer.

The Talkshire podcast is a great way to relax or be entertained when out and about... you can take my ‘play on‘ word(s) for it!
