Food for Thought Lent Supper and Talk: A Bishop in the House of Lords presented by Bishop John Packer tonight, Thursday, February 21 at 7pm. Tickets are available from Kate Cleeves on 01765 689255 and cost £2.50 each for supper, followed by the talk. John is the Bishop of Ripon and Leeds. He was ordained in 1970 and was Curate of St Helier, in Southwark. He has worked in posts from Berkshire to Cumbria and was appointed Bishop of Ripon and Leeds in 2000. In 2006, he was called to the House of Lords as a Lord Spiritual. He is the Bishops’ Parliamentary Spokesperson for immigration and asylum, urban affairs and welfare reform. In 2012 he was instrumental in defeating the coalition government’s plan to put a cap on benefits given to families, when his amendment to exclude child benefit from the plan was passed in the House of Lords.

Methodist Church Service: Rev Roy Newell will lead the service at the Methodist Chapel, Masham at 10.30am on Sunday, February 24.

Masham Local History Group: is proud to present a special guest night with an illustrated talk by Alan Smith on British Exploration of Antarctica at Masham Town Hall on Tuesday, February 26 at 7.30pm. Since Captain Cook in 1772 until 1958 there have been 33 major British expeditions to the Antarctic. This is Alan’s selection of some of them. Alan first went to the Antarctic in the early 1960s when he overwintered and worked for the British Antarctic Survey until he retired in 1994 going to the Antarctic every austral summer. Alan has won several awards, one of them being the Polar Medal. Non members are charged £3 per meeting which includes refreshments. For more information, please contact the secretary by e-mail:
