Chapel service: there will be a Christingle service and cafe worship with the Rev Ruth Parry at 10.30am on Sunday in the Ebenezer Chapel.

Church services: The Rev Lesley Ashton will celebrate the Eucharist at 10.30am on Sunday in St Andrew’s church. The carol service will be held next Sunday at 10.30am. The midweek communion service begins at 10.30am on Wednesday.

Craft afternoon: the next craft afternoon will be held in the mechanics’ institute from 2-4pm today. You can bring along any knitting, needlework, rag rugging, card making or any other craft or just come along for tea/coffee and a chat. These sessions will be held every two weeks during the winter months. The first craft afternoon of the new year will be on Thursday, January 9.

Christmas craft fair: the annual patronal craft fair takes place from11am-2pm on Saturday in the mechanics’ institute. The children from Kirkby Malzeard primary school will sing and there will be a range of stalls including gifts, jams, cakes, cards, books, plants, silk flowers, dolls’ clothing and children’s wear. There will be gifts from Father Christmas and toasted sandwiches will be on sale. The proceeds will go to St Andrew’s church and a named charity in Ghana.

St Michael’s Hospice: the annual Light up a Life service will be held at Ripon cathedral at 3pm on Sunday. If you wish to dedicate a light on the Christmas tree to remember someone special please complete a form which is available from the Ripon Hospice shop or contact the hospice on 01423 879687.

Mechanics institute events: needlecraft will be held from 1.30-3.30pm and badminton from 7pm today. The technical knockout class is from 9.15-10.15am but please remember there will be no yoga class tomorrow as the hall will be in use for setting up the craft fair. On Tuesday the mixability exercise class is from 2- 3pm and body blitz aerobics from 7-8pm.

Coffee morning: the last coffee morning before Christmas will be held at the Methodist Chapel from 10am-noon on Tuesday, December 10 when there will be coffee and delicious home-made biscuits, and cakes and cards will be on sale.

School play: everyone is invited to school for the Christmas production. It will be staged at 2pm on both Wednesday, December 11 and Thursday, December 12.

Film night: the mechanics’ institute film night will be held on Friday, December 13. It begins at 7.30pm. Look in the mechanics’ institute for further details.

Concert: the Highside Singers will present their Christmas concert at St Andrew’s church on Friday, December 13. It starts at 7.30pm and tickets are on sale at Kirkby Stores.

Festive lunch: there is a change of venue for this year’s festive Christmas lunch but there will still be the usual delicious hot turkey sandwiches, a vegetarian option, mulled wine, soft drinks, mince pies and tea or coffee. An extra this year will be a little Christmas entertainment. Lunch will be held from noon to 2pm on Saturday, December 14 at the mechanics’ institute and is to raise funds to support the work of Christian Aid. A donation of at least £6 will be welcome.

Women’s fellowship: The Rev Ruth Parry will be the guest when members meet for their Christmas party in the chapel schoolroom at 2.15pm on Wednesday, December 18.

Carol singing: singers are invited to meet at 6pm at The Green on Wednesday, December 18 and Sunday, December 22 to tour the village. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

School carol service: Kirkby Malzeard Primary School will hold its carol service in Saint Andrew’s church at 2pm on Thursday, December 19 to which everyone is welcome.

Concert: at 7.30pm on Friday, December 20 the Highside Singers will be presenting their Christmas concert at Grantley village hall. Tickets are available from choir and Hospice committee members or by phoning 01765 658838. The ticket price of £7.50 includes tea/coffee and mince pies or shortbread.

Poppy collection: many thanks to those people who supported the recent poppy appeal. The total raised in the Kirkby Malzeard area was £2,186.08 and a special mention and thanks goes to all the collectors who gave up their time for this worthy cause.

Parish council: please note that there will be no parish council meeting this month unless something urgent requires attention.

Aldfield - Church service: there is no service in St Lawrence’s Church on Sunday.

Dallowgill - Chapel service: Sunday worship at 2pm in Dallowgill chapel will be led by the Rev Sue Barclay.

Meeting: members of the Discover Dallowgill History group meet in the chapel schoolroom at 3pm on Sunday.

Fountains Abbey: Fr Angelo will lead a service of carols by candlelight at 3pm on Sunday at Fountains Abbey.

Galphay - Folk dance club: Blind Panic are the band and Tony Whitehead the caller when members of the Highside folk dance club meet in the village institute from 8-10pm tomorrow. The charge is £3 for adults and 50p for children.

Craft fair: from 10am-3pm on Saturday the village institute will be the venue for a craft fair. Among a host of stalls there will be Galphay-made moisturiser, Christmas decorations, cards and homeware for sale. There will be an opportunity to have a mini beauty treatment and refreshments will be available all day. Contributions of raffle prizes will be welcome.

Film night: this will be held on Wednesday, December 11. It starts at 7pm. The film to be screened is The Holiday.

Grantley – Dominoes: Christmas dominoes and draw will take place in the village hall at 7.30pm tomorrow. Tickets are available from committee members and there are excellent prizes to be won.

Christmas fair: the Fountains parish Christmas fair will be held at Grantley village hall on Saturday. It starts at 2.30pm. There will be all the usual attractions with Christmas gifts and cards, cakes and produce for sale, a raffle and tombola, and teas will be served. Father Christmas is expected to pay a visit.

WI: Members of Grantley and Winksley WI will celebrate with a Christmas dinner to be held on Wednesday.

Dancing: From 7.30-10pm next Thursday, December 12 there will be the mid-week dancing session in the village hall.

Carols: Fountains Primary School will hold their carol service on Friday, December 20. Everyone is welcome to come along.

Concert: you are invited to Celebrate Christmas with the Highside Singers in the village hall at 7.30pm on Friday, December 20 and enjoy tea or coffee and mince pies or shortbread.

Dance: the annual Boxing Day dance will be held at the village hall from 8pm-midnight when Alan’s band will play and there will be a raffle and supper.

Laverton – Carol singing: carol singers are invited to meet at 6.30pm on Monday, December 23 to tour the village.

Sawley - Chapel service: there is no service on Sunday in Sawley chapel.

Church service: the family carol service led by Liz Jarvis begins at 10.30am on Sunday in the Church of St Michael and All Angels.

Village hall events: table tennis begins at 7.30pm on Monday. On Tuesday there will be a bowls match at 7.30pm and the village hall committee members meet at 7.45pm.

North Country Theatre: North Country Theatre’s latest production, The Lost World, will be staged at the village hall on Friday, December 13, It’s the fascinating story of a pterodactyl loose in London and a balloon ride! Tickets are now on sale, price £8.50, and are available by contacting Arlene on 01765 620250.

Carol singing: carol singing in the village and surrounding areas begins on Thursday, December 19 and will continue, weather permitting, each evening until Thursday, December 26. Please meet at 6.30pm on The Green.

Whist and dominoes: the Christmas whist and domino evening begins in the village hall at 7.30pm on Friday, December 20.

Winksley - Church service: the Eucharist will be celebrated by the Rev Caroline Falkingham at 9am on Sunday in the Church of Ss Cuthbert and Oswald. Next week’s carol service begins at the later time of 11am and will be followed by seasonal refreshments.
