Sunrise walkers have been given an extra week to sign up this year’s fundraising event.
The deadline for Ripon’s Sunrise Walk, which raises money for Saint Michael’s Hospice, has been extended until Friday, September 9 to make sure that people returning from summer holidays do not miss out. More than 100 people have so far registered for the Sunrise Walk, which took place for the first time last year.
Saint Michael’s Hospice Chief Executive, Tony Collins, said:
“We are extending the deadline by a week because we’re conscious that people, especially those with children, who are returning late from summer holidays might miss the boat. “We want as many people as possible taking part in the Sunrise Walk so extending the deadline for registrations seems like the sensible thing to do. “Hopefully this will give everyone ample opportunity to sign up and we look forward to seeing a large turn-out on Sunday, September 18.” Entry costs £9 and all personal sponsorship money goes to help providing the best patient care possible at Saint Michael’s Hospice.
The walk is sponsored for the second year running by Ripon-based accountants and business advisors Eura Audit UK, who will be fielding a team of six walkers.
Also taking part are retired GP and current President of Rotary Club of Ripon, Dr Derek Jeary and the family of Ripon man Len Nolan who died in February.
Mr Nolan was cared for at the hospice’s in-patient unit within four months of having been diagnosed with lung cancer.
His widow, Vivienne, her sister Toni Fraser and daughter Leonie Chappell will be walking in his memory to thank the hopsice for all the support they were given.
“Taking part in the walk is the perfect way to say think you for the absolutely brilliant way the staff cared for Len and the rest of the family as well.
“Even though Len was only in the in-patient unit for four or five days, it became like a home fom home we were treated so well,” Mrs Nolan said. It costs £3.9m to maintain Saint Michael’s Hospice current levels of service to more than 2,400 patients and their families each year.
More than 80 per cent of this amount is raised by gifts, donations and fundraising events like the Ripon Sunrise Walk. Supporters can also text their donations for the Sunrise Walk by sending the code SUNW11 and the donation amount to 70070.
Taxpayers can also add 25 per cent in Gift Tax. For more information or to pick up a registration form call into the Saint Michael’s Hospice shop at 6 North Street, Ripon or contact the hospice on 01423 879687.
