He told guests at the Cedar Court Hotel: “Harrogate borough is quite rightly recognised as a real priority and a key part of the county’s identity.

“It is because we are a large and effective county council, thanks to the role Harrogate and its area plays, that we are able to deliver really strong services and to protect young people and the older generation, and enhance everyone’s quality of life in the district.”

He added that the Local Government Association’s peer group was impressed with the quality of service provided.

“This accolade, about to be officially announced this week, has come from the local government’s equivalent of the school’s Ofsted inspectors.

“We have an award winning children’s service and one of the country’s highest performing adult social care departments.

“Harrogate is hugely important to the wider North Yorkshire family and this is proved with the major investment into double tracking the line between Harrogate and York, and working hard with partners, including the borough council, to have the Harrogate line included in the Government’s electrification programme.”

Coun Jeffels added that a study was underway into a relief road for Harrogate.

“Such a road would be of enormous benefit to Harrogate’s economy and the quality of life in general for its residents and tourists,” he said.

Coun Jeffels praised Coun and Mrs Simms who, he said, had been outstanding ambassadors for the Harrogate area in their year of office.

“They have worked extremely hard to build good links between the council and the residents and are to be warmly congratulated.”
