Gift appeal makes urgent plea for help

Organisers of a festive appeal are urging people to make donations to help put smiles on children's faces this Christmas.

Weeks after the launch, a spokesman for the Wetherby and District Christmas Gift Appeal said there has been a poor response.

“The Appeal comes to an end on December 14, and I am disappointed to say that we have had very few gifts donated so far,” said David Dawson.

“Now that the Christmas shopping season seems to be in full swing, we just want to prompt people to buy that small extra present for someone who might otherwise miss out this Christmas.“

The appeal, formerly known as the Toy Appeal and organised by Wetherby Methodist Church and Salvation Army, has enjoyed great success in recent years.

This year the change in name was to encourage people to give gifts, in the £5-£15 range, for older children.

David advised that gifts should be new and suitable for a boy or girl up to 15-years (especially 11-15 years).

They should be taken, unwrapped, to one of the collection points: Margins Bookshop in Church Street, Vision Express in Market Place, and Treasures Toys.
