Oversubscribed for another year running, 110 teams were hopeful for a final spot in the running of the ever-popular event.

Since organisers, Knaresborough Lions, had to set a maximum number of places due to space restrictions in parts of the track, the race usually has more entries than it can take.

Nigel Perry from Knaresborough Lions said: “We have had more entries before this is sort of an average amount for the bed race over the last ten year. We are oversubscribed most years.

“It’s a very popular event, people enter year on year it’s the biggest event in Knaresborough and it’s one of the biggest community events held in North Yorkshire.”

The massive event is famous in the town and known to draw crowds in the thousands.

Nigel continued: “I think people are very keen to take part. We have got people who have run for 30 years that’s not uncommon - those who have run from their late teens to now when they are in their 50s.

“It’s vital for the town, it’s never been cancelled. Over 50 years there has only been two occasions where the river crossing had to be cancelled.

“It’s something you find engages the whole community because people dress up. Some of the beds are spectacular.”

This is the 51st year of the bed race and the theme is ‘cities of the world’, which will see teams given a different venue from all corners of the globe.
