Factory visit really takes the biscuit for panellists

Year 5 pupils from a Harrogate junior school have 'hob nobbed' with food industry experts during a visit to a Yorkshire biscuit factory.

The youngsters from Ashville Junior School were given a behind the scenes tour of the Fox’s factory in Batley - where they saw for themselves how the firm’s best-known products are made – before being challenged to create their own brand.

Following the mouth-watering visit, which included plenty of opportunities to sample the products, students were split into teams to come up with a new biscuit.

In addition to the key ingredients and name, the teams were also asked to devise the packaging, design a marketing poster and execute an advertising video.

A panel of Year 5 class teachers selected five finalists who then had the task of presenting their creation to Paul Carbutt, Fox’s training and development officer, in the hope he would recommend his firm to manufacture their biscuit.

The design which tickled Mr Carbutt’s taste buds the most were the “sour saucers”, the brain child of Harriet, Anna and Olivia.

Ashville Junior School headmaster Simon Bailey said: “The Year 5’s really got their teeth stuck into this project, which combined creativity and teamwork with marketing and presentation skills.

“The visit to Fox’s was a great experience, made even better by getting to sample a variety of biscuits at the end.”

“It was fascinating to see the machines at work, and learn about the process of making a biscuit from start to finish.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to Mr Carbutt and his Fox’s colleagues for allowing us to tour their factory. He was very impressed with the innovative biscuits produced by the pupils, which included ‘Big Bad Biscuits’ and ‘Emoji Biscuits’.

“However, the biscuits which stood out for him were Sour Saucers, especially as Harriet, Anna and Olivia had baked delicious samples the night before for him to taste.”
