Ripon Cathedral is hosting an exciting week-long festival of music from Sunday, until May 20.

The week will culminate in a choir open day on May 20, 1pm to 4pm, offering young people the chance to meet, rehearse, and sing with the Cathedral’s celebrated choir at the Evensong service.

A packed programme of hymns and music written in the last 50 years will be performed at the 10.30am and 3.30pm services on both Sundays during the festival, and at 6pm Tuesday to Friday.

Composers have been invited to submit new choral or instrumental pieces, with a special competition category for junior composers - which gives them the chance to have their work played or performed during the Ripon New Music Week.

The Cathedral’s Director of Music, Andrew Bryden, said: “Not only do choristers receive free musical training, they also learn organisational skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

“Being a chorister builds confidence and provides a life-long skill. Choristers are highly prized by schools. Previous choristers have gone on to sing in the National Youth Choir and have obtained choral and music scholarships to universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and Durham.”

To book a place on the choir open day, contact the Cathedral’s music office on 01765 603496, or email choiropenday@riponcathedral.org.uk to find out more.
