Harrogate pupils show awareness of climate change ideas as district aims for zero emissions future

£3m extra for Harrogate's Gateway project to transform town centre as campaigners raise concern at 'legal issues'

Earlier this week several local schools took part enthusiastically in Walk to School day.

In addition, pupils are responding to appeals from Harrogate District Climate Change Coalition to submit entries to a new school climate competition.

The contest, which involves creating a podcast, video, poem or poster about youngsters' ideas on tackling climate change, will feed into the first-ever Harrogate Climate Action Festival in the autumn in the lead up to Britain's host role in the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Glasgow from November 1.

Kirsty Hallett of the Climate Action Festival planning team said: “We can see from the enthusiasm young people have for the recent Walk to School day that young people have the most exciting thoughts and can imagine solutions to the climate crisis which will really make a huge difference.

"The expert judging panel includes an artist, an author and an educationalist, all from our district.

"Everybody involved is excited about seeing our local students’ ideas for the sustainable future of green spaces, transport and energy.”

Young people can do the work at home or away but all entries must be submitted by a member of staff at a school or college in Harrogate district by September 20.

Harrogate's Climate Action Festival (CAFé) will take place from October 1 to October 21 with events across the Harrogate district all aimed to support moves towards becoming a net zero emissions district.
