Boston Spa trees welcomed

Environmentally friendly volunteers have been out and about planting trees.

The Boston, Spa, Wetherby & Villages Community Green Group have been busy again, adding to the orchard creation in the village, by planting an avenue of mixed berry Rowan trees along West Lane in the heart of the West End estate.

“Local residents are delighted as these will add shade along the lane and next to the bench and encourage more birds, as the trees will produce different colour berries at different times,” said Penny Stables of the group.

“Again big thanks to Wetherby Lions, Boston Spa Parish Council and the Ward Councillors for providing the funding to allow this to happen.

“And a big thanks to Mike Gadd who has organised the purchases of the trees and the planting rota.

“Thanks to the members of the Community Green Group who have planted the trees, including Thomas Mills and with his Mum Georgina, who worked really hard to dig the huge hole needed to plant.”

Jan Davies, a local resident who overlooks the avenue added: “I am delighted with these lovely new trees.

“I can look out on them from my window and I am happy to help water them.”

Local residents are taking on the watering of the trees over the next three years.

Sara King who lives on the estate is putting together a rota on a WattsApp group.

Looking ahead, the Green Group is aiming to plant another small community orchard to the north of West Lane, which will provide fruit across forthcoming summers for local people to enjoy.

The Green Group recently co-ordinated the planting of fruit trees in Deepdale Park in Boston Spa.
