Police are appealing for vital witnesses to come forward after an elderly Ripon man has died, four-and-a-half months after falling from his mobility scooter.

Roderick Sawford, 87, who is also known locally as Ray, was riding his mobility scooter along Highfield Road at around 12.25pm on Thursday, February 9 2012, and fell off the scooter as he was turning left into Lead Lane.

He was taken to hospital with face and head injuries and released after treatment but was readmitted to Harrogate District Hospital on 19 March, where he sadly died on Saturday, June 23 as a result of the injuries he sustained in the collision, a police spokesman said.

Now officers want to trace two men in a black vehicle who stopped at the scene and helped Mr Sawford before an ambulance arrived.

They would also like to speak to anyone who saw Mr Sawford fall, or saw a mobility scooter being ridden along Highfield Road prior to the incident.

Anyone who has any information, including the two men in the black vehicle, is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Sergeant Hamish Halloway.
