A MAN was left with a serious injury to his hand after being assaulted in Ripon with what police believe may have been a broken glass or bottle.
Police have just revealed details of the attack which happened as the 24-year-old local man was walking along Park Street heading westwards towards Clotherholme Road on Saturday, June 2, sometime between 5am and 7am.
The victim was close to the entrance to Spa Park – across the road from the Ripon Spa Baths swimming pool – when he was approached by a man who jabbed the sharp object towards his face.
It was while raising his hand to protect himself from being hit by the weapon that he suffered the serious cut to his hand.
PC Dave Furlong, of Ripon Safer Neighbourhood Team, said the injuries would have been a lot more serious if not for the the swift actions of the victim when he was confronted by his attacker.
“This was a nasty and apparently unprovoked assault. It is only through the quick reactions of the victim himself that the injuries are not far more severe,” said PC Furlong.
“I urge anyone who can identify the man responsible to contact the police or Crimestoppers straight away.”
During Ripon police’s appeal for information, a description of the male attacker was issued.
He is described as 5ft 8in to 5ft 9in tall with an athletic build and short dark hair.
He was wearing a jacket, stone or grey jeans with elsaticated ankles and light-coloured canvass trainers.
Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is asked to contact Ripon police station by telephoning the non-emergency telephone number 101, pressing option 2 and asking for Dave Furlong.
Alternatively, anyone who would like to remain anonymous can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting crime reference number 12120089829.
