Chip and walkies on the rocks for dogs

With the help of the Dogs Trust, the National Trust will be running drop in sessions at Brimham visitor centre from 11am to 3pm.

There will also be free health checks and microchip checking services available. Normal admission charges apply.

“We are keen that all our visitors, whether on two or four legs, have a great time when at Brimham,” explained visitor services manager Stephanie Hinchcliffe.

“Unfortunately, every now and then, we come across a lost dog.

“Making sure all the pooches are microchipped is now a legal requirement, but it also means that we are able to quickly and safely return lost dogs to their owners.”

Brimham Rocks has always been a favourite destination for dog-walking and has a dedicated local every-day dog-walking community.

It has also carved itself a niche as a dog-friendly visitor attraction in the area, with an off the trodden path dog walking route, drink bowls available at the refreshment kiosk and visitor centre, and ‘paws welcome’ policy in the shop and exhibition area.

Volunteer litter fairy, Lucy Ibbotson said: “Our dog walkers are very responsible and ever since the installation of the dog poo bins it has greatly helped to reduce what had become a growing dog mess problem.

“It helps that if the visitors have forgotten the essentials they can just pick up a Poop Scoop from the visitor centre or borrow a lead while at Brimham.”

Brimham Rocks also has a number of its own dog volunteers; all microchipped to comply with the new law.

Carrog, the volunteer ranger dog, always helps out with the yearly Hallowe’en activities and obediently wears the PPE gear to protect himself from generator noise.

Mollie, the Day Maker cockapoo, has been a great help in running the geology events.

Biff-Biff and Hilary form an inseparable pair together looking after the cleanliness of the site.
