Cemetery plan re-think urged

RIPON City Council is to write to Harrogate Borough Council asking it to reconsider plans to create a new cemetery site on Little Harries Lane.

At a city council meeting on Monday, the Mayor of Ripon, Coun Mick Stanley (Ind), said he had spent “considerable time” looking at the present site on Kirkby Road and believed its capacity could be increased if space was used more effectively.

“There is lots of space in the current cemetery not used,” said the Mayor.

“I would question the two-year time-limit figure from Harrogate Borough Council if the land was used more carefully.”

He also said if the cemetery was to expand, Harrogate Borough Council should look to the former college grounds to the east of the site – not north towards the Little Harries Lane site.

Harrogate Borough Council already owns the land at Little Harries Lane but not the former college grounds.

Coun Alan Skidmore (Con) said: “I think the borough council should look at something else but I feel in the present climate, if it’s a question of having to purchase land, I genuinely believe they will turn around and say, ‘We ain’t got the money’.

“I think it’s right to tell them to look again but if you go down that route it will either be passed over us or they’ll say, ‘That’s what (the land purchase) is going to cost – what do you want to do about it?’.”

The decision to write to the borough council was backed unanimously by city councillors.
