There were big celebrations at a Ripon care home yesterday (Wednesday) when one woman celebrated turning 107.
Doris Mawrey, who was born on April 8, 1908, marked the occasion with staff and residents including five fellow centenarians who live at the Anchor-run Borrage House on Borrage Lane in the city.
Doris was born in West Hampstead, London, to Charles and Emma Weng and had a sister, Gladys, and brother, Ernest. At the age of 36, Doris volunteered for Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), assisting the Red Cross nurses based in Burton on Trent.
Here she met her husband, Norman, who was a Warrant Officer and in 1947 she gave birth to her son, Robert. In 1952, the couple become the landlords of a pub in the village of North Moreto in Oxfordshire. When Doris retired, she move to Cockermouth in Cumbria before moving to Borrage House.
Helping Doris celebrate her 107th birday were fellow centenarians Reginald Jackson, 101; Dorothy Lee, 100; Adele Simpson, 103; and - not pictured – Harry Han, 101; and Alex ‘Pip’ Hayden, 105.
Reginald Jackson was born on September 25, 1913, in the Knaresborough area. After leaving school, he became a qualified pharmacist. During the Second World War he enlisted and joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and was based in Germany. Reginald married Elsie in 1938 and they had a son, Peter, who is a doctor.
Dorothy Lee, born on May 27, 1914, was a housewife and brought up two children and lived at Studley Rodger.
Dorothy said she has always considered Yorkshire as her home even though she spent her childhood in Sherwood, Nottinghamshire.
Adele Simpson was born on July 26, 2011. She grew up on a family farm in Galphay and was married to Richard Simpson . After the war, Adele became a teacher.
Harry Han was born on March 20, 1914 in Shepherd’s Bush in London and had an ironmongers shop in Harrow before retiring to the Ripon area. ‘Pip’ Hayden was born in Cambridge on March 21, 1910, and after more than 50 years of marriage to Kate moved to Ripon. He later became the treasurer of the Friends of Ripon Cathedral group.
