Super-fast broadband is being made available to businesses at Thorp Arch Estate, near Wetherby, following a £50,000 investment.

It will provide more than 100 of the 140 businesses on the estate with broadband speeds of up to 90Mb per second.

The initial £50,000 scheme is the first of three by the estate’s owner, London-based Rockspring Hanover Property Unit Trust, and is a further step towards the development of a science park on the north side of the 385-acre site.

The latest fibre-to-the-cabinet technology has been installed by internet service provider, York Data Services. The company said that businesses on the estate will experience some of the fastest internet speeds in the UK because the final copper delivery is so close to the fibre-optic cable.

Tim Munns, director of Wharfedale Property Management Ltd, which runs the Thorp Arch Estate and is also based there, said: “After recent office developments and other improvements, we’re pleased to bring affordable super-fast broadband to tenants.

“We are sure that this will become another significant attraction for business start-ups and enterprises seeking to relocate to become part of a well-established commercial community.”

He added: “This is also another step towards developing a science park, focusing on health and innovation, providing laboratories and offices for enterprises which are ready to end their incubation period at university science parks and become part of a wider and more diverse business community.”

The first tenant to sign up to the fibre-optic high-speed broadband service is biotechnology company, Avacta Group Plc, which relocated from York Science Park two years ago.
