Marton-le-Moor Barbecue: residents in Marton-le-Moor enjoyed the annual village barbecue, supported for the fourth year by the Booths store in Ripon, last Saturday. For many years the village has held a sunflower competition and this year’s prizes were awarded at the barbecue. The winning sunflower was an amazing 10 feet six inches, grown by Adrian Shaw. Adrian also won the men’s category and was awarded the Ron Smith Trophy. The women’s award was won by Sue Baker whose sunflower was six feet 10 inches and Alfie Tennant won the children’s category with his seven feet 9 inch flower. Over the summer the village has also run a gold, silver and bronze square competition with prizes of a glider flight and a Tucano simulator session being donated by Richard Cole. The winning squares were drawn at the barbecue with Jonathan Boase winning the simulator session, Sheila Clargo the glider flight and John Koscik the bottle of wine. The next village event is an autumn quiz with quiz master Andrew Wilkinson on Saturday, October 19.
Mothers’ Union: the September meeting is today at 2pm in St James Church, Boroughbridge with speaker Janet Richardson on Praying and Working Together. The Mothers’ Union is still collecting for the Salvation Army food bank, please leave your well in date non perishables in the box at St James Church. Many thanks to all who have generously donated.
Bingo Night: Boroughbridge Community Care’s bingo night is on Saturday in the Coronation Hall at 7.30pm. For last minute ticket availability please contact the community care office on Hall Square in Boroughbridge.

Amblers: the group has a four to five mile walk at North Stainley and the nature reserve on Tuesday. The walk includes a private nature reserve so sorry, no dogs are allowed. Lifts are available and transport sharing is encouraged. Everyone is welcome.
Film Society: the Yore Film Society starts its autumn season on Tuesday with a screening of Life of Pi, certificate PG at the Coronation Hall at 8pm. Tickets are £3.50 and there is free parking. Friday Night is Music Night: there is a Friday Night is Music Night event at Minskip Village Hall on Friday, September 27. Music for MacMillan begins at 7.30pm and all proceeds are for MacMillan Cancer Care. There will be a guest appearance by the Rallentando String Quartet and light refreshments will be available. Everyone is welcome to come along and sing or play, you are equally welcome to come along just to listen. Admission is free and there will be collections taking place for MacMillan.
Shoebox Appeal For Children in Distress: Gill Ward is collecting shoeboxes filled with essentials and gifts for some of the most disadvantaged children in Romania. Coffee and Shop: the coffee and shop event, with all proceeds to MacMillan Cancer Support, is on Friday, September 27 from 10am-12.30pm in Marton cum Graftom Memorial Hall. Please come along for coffee and cake, browse round the stalls and have your nails filed and polished by Jancey. There will be a raffle, Phoenix cards, Kit and Kaboodal linens and scarves and Green Tree Treasures with jewellery.
Collavoce Sing Showstoppers: looking ahead to October Collavoce, a choir formed of singers from Marton cum Grafton, Whixley and surrounding village, will sing showstoppers on Saturday, October 5 at 7.30pm in Marton cum Grafton Memorial Hall.
