Tadcaster pupils’ poetry to aid NSPCC

Students from Tadcaster have joined other North Yorkshire pupils in showing their creative side and raising vital funds for the NSPCC with a new book of poetry in support of the charity.

Ten schools from the Ebor Academy Trust took part in a poetry competition, with more than 400 poems written by five to 11-year-olds on the theme of ‘looking forward to life after lockdown’.

Tim Moat, Director of Communications and Development for the Academy trust, said: “This was a wonderful idea which has helped the pupils from schools across the Academy to find their voices and tell the world how they felt about the pandemic and their feelings about life after lockdown.

“All of the entries were brilliant, and some brought a tear to the eye, so it’s wonderful to know that thanks to the booklets being made online, even more people can read it while donating to a great cause.”

The winning poems have been compiled into a special 24-page booklet, with 600 copies printed up to be sold online for a limited time only, with proceeds going to support the NSPCC

The NSPCC is holding the first national Childhood Day on June 11,

Elaine Kaye, NSPCC Community Fundraising Manager, said: “These poems are just wonderful, and show just how strongly the effects of the pandemic are being felt by children and young people.

“To see how eloquently they have expressed their feelings about lockdown just goes to show how the effects of the pandemic are effecting the younger generation, and making the work of the NSPCC and Childline in offering support and help all the more important.

“We’re hugely grateful to all the pupils who took part, and to everyone at the Ebor Academy Trust who helped make this wonderful collection happen.”

Childhood Day will celebrate play as a form of recovery and essential way to help improve children’s mental and emotional wellbeing as we move out of the pandemic.
