French connection in sport lesson

Wetherby High School pupils experienced a new sport with a French connection last week.

The town’s Pétanque Club teamed up for an afternoon of coaching and training in the French game.

“We had the pleasure of the Yorkshire Singles’ Champion, Alan Swift, alongside club members Charles and Roger, to help the students perfect their skills,” said a school spokesman.

“The students were able to put this into practice, taking part in a house competition across year groups.

“It was wonderful to see how the community and school worked together to bring new experiences to our young people.”

A student, who took part in the session, said: “It was fun to try something new and learn an activity that is linked to the French town (Privas) Wetherby is twinned with.

”We got better the more we practiced, but it is harder than it looks.”

Wetherby Twinning Association will be working closely with the school to offer future projects between High School students and their counterparts in Privas.

The school spokesman added: “Thank you again to all involved, we’re sure we have some future Wetherby Pétanque players in our midst.”
