Eco message for new generation

Pupils from Western Primary School in Harrogate went to see Europe's biggest carbon saving project as part of their science and environmental studies.

The group of around 60 children, aged seven-nine, visited Drax Power Station, near Selby, which has upgraded half its generating capacity to use compressed wood pellets in place of coal to generate 16 per cent of the UK’s renewable electricity.

Pupils were taken on a full tour of the site including the 427-metre turbine hall that houses the six huge turbines and had a close-up view of the UK’s first wood pellet storage domes, and cooling towers.

Western Primary teacher, Angelique Coatesworth, who organised the visit, said: “The children learnt a great deal and had a great day touring the plant. The staff were lovely and helped the children learn in a fun way. Some of the children said it was their best trip ever.”
