Lockdown boost: One of Harrogate's best-loved pubs is to reopen and here's the date

The sad news follows a report to the Advertiser that the Slug & Lettuce's doors at 13a Montpellier Parade were to remain closed and staff had been offered roles in other locations in the smart chain pub's national portfolio.

Today a phone call to the contemporary bar known for its cocktail list and classic British menu elicited the response that the Harrogate Slug & Lettuce had, in fact, closed down and would not be reopening despite the Government's intention to permit bars to serve customers indoors for the first time in six months from next Monday, May 17.

It's a blow for that part of the Montpellier Quarter near the West Park Stray where the five-storey Harrogate Advertiser offices were to be found for most of the 20th century before the newspaper relocated to Cardale Park in 1990.

At a national level, the Slug & Lettuce is one of the longest-standing brand names in bars and has gone through many changes to survive and prosper at towns and cities across England and Scotland.

The very first Slug and Lettuce opened in Islington in 1985. The 1990s saw it refurbished in a successful attempt to attract a more female clientele with a stronger emphasis on the food offer and cocktails.
