Anyone lucky enough to be in line for a big occupational pension after retirement might well think twice about giving it up to follow a new career. But one ex-serviceman took a giant leap of faith to swap financial security for a more fulfilling life in civvy street.

And the daring military man turned property entrepreneur says, despite the massive risk and bumps in the road, his decision has definitely changed life for the better, he says.

The journey for Ross Orrock really began when he attended a taster course about property investment and began to think it was possible to make it work as a business.

And the same course that kick-started Ross’s new career is taking place in Bradford for one day only this month with tickets priced at just £1 per person (although late cancellation/no show fees apply).

Among other things, the event will show people how to make an instant start on investing, how to finance the venture even without money to spare and how to find the best properties to renovate.

Ross certainly found the course inspiring but he had already become interested in the man behind it – self-made millionaire Samuel Leeds – after a YouTube video of the property guru caught his attention while having some downtime during a recent spell in Ukraine.

Property millionaire

Samuel, who made his first million from property at the age of 25, was putting his case to someone accusing him of fakery. Hugely impressed with Samuel’s response, Ross did some digging and found out that he ran crash courses in the UK.

Once back home, Ross paid the £1 course fee and turned up to find out more.

It was not a route he expected to take but his 17-year career had grown stale, leaving him feeling frustrated and under-valued by a lack of promotion. Despite his love of the job, he was desperately looking for a way out that would give him a good income and a much better work-life balance.

Lump sum

When he attended Samuel’s course, retirement from the military was just three years away but he was still keen to take his chances elsewhere.

“I would have left with a huge lump sum of money and been paid for the rest of my life, but I couldn’t do it. When you’re under-valued it squashes you. I couldn’t stand it any longer,” he explains.

He joined the Samuel Leeds Property Investors Training Academy and proved to be a quick learner.

However, success after the training was slow to follow and Ross began to wonder if he was doing the right thing. Even more so as some friends and relatives made no secret that they were struggling to follow the sense of his plan to swap a secure financial future for a much more uncertain one.

Support and guidance

But the novice entrepreneur turned to the academy for guidance and motivation both from experienced mentors and the numerous friends he’d made there. And persistence paid off when he struck his first deal and then went on to notch up more than 20 others.

“Together you end up finding what works. Ultimately, the key is finding a niche in the market – becoming a specialist and having that real understanding of what you’re doing,” he explains.

Based in Newcastle, his niche now is to help provide accommodation for people on low incomes by linking investors to housing associations.

Market knowledge

On New Year’s Day this year, Ross left his job to focus full-time on property and has now bought a house with his profits that he intends to renovate while living there.

He’s also gained a lot of knowledge about financial products and mortgages which he uses to his own advantage as well as sharing relevant details with investors. Time spent with agents, law firms and commercial brokers has helped give him more understanding of the market too.
