Epic 24-hour 288-mile cycle ride to raise £10k for cancer charity

The managing partner of Harrogate recruitment firm GPS Return is preparing to cycle 288 miles in just 24 hours to raise £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Simon Gregory will be attempting the feat in memory of his aunt, Reverend Ruth Scott, who died from a rare form of lymphoma in 2019.

She was a presenter on the BBC Radio 2 show Pause for Thought with Terry Wogan and Chris Evans for 25 years, and was also one of the first female vicars, a midwife, circus clown and worked in conflict management in the Middle East and Northern Ireland.

Mr Gregory took up cycling when his aunt died and said it helped him to deal with her death.

Inspired by his aunt, who once cycled from Rome to Jerusalem, he will ride from the MacMillan Centre in Harrogate to the University Hospital Southampton, where his aunt was treated, on June 18 starting at Harrogate and ending at Southampton where his aunt was treated. He will have to cycle an average of almost 12.5 miles an hour, including any stops, for 24 hours to hit his target.
