It was a case of ‘deja-vu’ for the staff at Ripley Castle recently when they played host to the Harrogate Dramatic Society on a photo shoot for their latest production of Lettice and Lovage by Peter Shaffer.

In the title role of Lettice, Sally Waghorn opens the play by leading a group of visitors around a stately home.

Ripley Castle’s head guide Margaret Richardson was later able to offer some advice to Sally on ‘tour guide etiquette’.

Margaret said: “Of course, we can’t make up stories like Lettice does in the play, we have to stick to the facts but I know the play and it’s very funny to watch.”

Margaret’s advice is being used by Sally in her performance, particularly the technique of developing the tour around the family portraits.

At Fustian House, the fictional stately home in the play, the family portraits need a little enlivening and Sally’s performance becomes far more theatrical than would be possible at Ripley Castle.

Audiences are advised to watch out out for the fabulous tales of John Fustian’s athletic leap up the staircase to save Elizabeth I from falling and Arabella Fustian’s tragic fall down the same staircase as she is knocked over by the family’s faithful wolfhound!

The play runs from April 2-5 in the Studio at Harrogate Theatre.
