The Ripon Young Musicians of the Year 2013 competition takes place at Holy Trinity Church on the evening of Friday, November 22 and throughout Saturday, November 23 –but the closing date
for entries is Friday, October 25.

The annual event– billed as “a celebration of all young musicians in the area” – encourages the musical talent of young people who live within 15 miles of the centre of Ripon.

Most of the classes are organised according to school years and offer an opportunity for players and singers at any level, from beginners to highly accomplished musicians, to perform to an appreciative audience.

After the competition, the class winners will take part in a concert in which they will be joined by the local young string group Fiddlefingers.

All the competition classes and the concert are open to members of the public, who are encouraged to come to support the young entrants.

As well as the winners of the various classes, four winners will be chosen to take part in the Rotary District Young Musicians 2014 competition in York in February.

The adjudicator for the competition – run by the Inner Wheel Club and Rotary Club of Ripon Rowels and Ripon Rotary Club – is Penny Stirling, formerly head of the string department at Wells Cathedral School and head of the Instrumental Music Service for Wiltshire.

After moving to Manchester she directed the Royal Northern College of Music’s Junior Strings Project.

Since 2004 she has been director of Yorkshire Young Musicians, a centre for advanced training of highly-talented children in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Leaflets and entry forms for Ripon Young Musicians of the Year 2013 have been sent to schools and private teachers, and are available at Ripon Library, Ripon Leisure Centre and Ripon Cathedral, and in other outlets in and around the city.
