North Yorkshire’s Deer Shed Festival has made its first major announcement of this year’s acts.

Held each July, this highly-popular, family-friendly live music event sounds like it’s going to be the best to date with a terrific line-up of luminaries from the indie, acoustic and dance worlds.

Running from July 25-27 at a lovely 90-acre site at Baldersby Park near Topcliffe, the initial line-up for the fifth Deer Shed features a veritable cream of indie acts.

Big names include Johnny Marr, British Sea Power, Stornoway, Steve Mason, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip plus there’s some lesser but quality acts such as Summer Camp, We Were Evergreen, Withered Hand, Denai Moore, Nordic Giants, PAWS and Pins.

It’s a real coup for Deer Shed to have secured Johnny Marr, the former Smiths’ guitarist and songwriter who was also rumoured to be lined up to appear at Live at Leeds in May.

Despite playing with a lengthy list of top musicians since the classic band split up in the 1980s - from Bryan Ferry to The Cribs - it’s always felt like Marr has languished slightly in Morrissey’s shadow.

But the release last year of The Messenger, incredibly Marr’s first-ever proper solo album full of bright, jangly guitar rock, finally put him squarely in the spotlight and in the UK top ten, too.

In addition to the music, there’s also an emphasis on science and learning for the younger members of the Deer Shed Festival audience.

There will be a full programme of workshops and children’s activities centred on the theme of time travel.

Despite being home to a sea of family tents, visitors can also enjoy plenty of camping space at Baldersby Park.

It is a beautiful place to spend a weekend under canvas with good spots for campervans, caravans and trailer tents.

Organisers of Deer Shed 5 are also on the hunt for volunteers to help at the festival.

It’s for over-18s only and in return you get an adult weekend ticket.
